1st Mate replaces the traditional engine cut-off switch with a wireless fob, a central hub, and a smartphone app. The system reacts automatically in emergency situations – without the need for a mechanical lanyard.

How does the 1st Mate system work?

  • Man overboard alert – if the captain falls overboard, the engine shuts down automatically, an alarm is triggered, and mobile devices receive a message with recovery instructions.
  • Passenger location – the system records the last known location of a fob when contact is lost (indicating a person has gone overboard).
  • SOS signaling – emergency situations can be reported directly through the mobile app.
  • Boat immobilizer – the central hub enables remote engine lockout to protect against theft (also available in a version compatible with all engine brands, not just Mercury).

Device communication within the system

Captain and passenger fobs communicate wirelessly with the central hub, which connects to the engine. If contact with a fob is lost – for example, when someone falls overboard – the system reacts immediately, securing the vessel and notifying users via alarms, engine shutdown, and GPS alerts.

Proven reliability – confirmed by testing

The 1st Mate system is already integrated into Mercury SmartCraft engines (single- and twin-engine versions). Feedback and practical testing confirm its reliability and intuitive operation.
